The Bikini

The bikini turns 65 this year. Though two-piece swimming suits for women date back to the Romans, its birth in modern fashion history was recorded on July 5, 1946 in the now abandoned Piscine Molitor, a swimming complex located in Paris. Its name comes from the Bikini Atoll, an atomic bomb the US was testing in Pacific Ocean just a few days prior to the fashion show where the swimsuit was shown for the first time. The public outrage was comparable with that caused by the atom bomb tests, hence its name.
